THE CALL TO ADVENTURE

Something shakes up the situation, either from external pressures or from something rising up from deep within, so the hero must face the beginnings of change.

Working the mundane job the main character has time to think, often too much time and his mind wanders. With the loss of a friend recently he is left with thoughts of missing the friend, wondering about the friends he does have and how they compare to friends he used to have in his younger years, and the realities of life in general. His social circle has closed to his family and a few people he would actually truly call his "friends." Recently, these thoughts have him contemplate life and where he is in his life, is he happy, is life worth changing, etc.

While in a stage of mind-wandering as he was driving from one stop to another he doesn't recognize the spider that had lowered itself down from the top of the cab of the truck and onto his arm. His fear of spiders and the initial shock of the spider on his arm makes him jump and lose control of the truck and sends it careening off the road.

When the hero awakens he finds that his truck and himself have landed somewhere...else...
